About The Race
The description below was written by the SEAL who is leading and organizing this mission…
The legendary Iditarod trail winds 1000 miles through frozen and unforgiving Alaskan Wilderness, and it gained notoriety in 1925 when it was used by sled dog teams to carry life-saving medicine from Anchorage to Gnome, which was 674 miles away and suffering from a fatal health epidemic. Beginning just outside Anchorage, our team of SEAL Future Foundation supporters will trek 350 miles through the Alaskan Wilderness with the same sense of urgency.
The Alaskan wilderness can quickly turn even the most well-seasoned challengers into desperate survivors, whose only hope is to find something worth living for, and keep fighting.
Our Team will cross jagged mountain ranges, brave temperatures that plummet to -50 degrees Fahrenheit, weather unpredictable and dangerous snow-storms, and cross unstable fields of ice that can swiftly crack open up into lethally cold ice water.
They will have minimal support, and only each other and their purpose to rely on.
They will be forced to reach deep within themselves and persist, while under constant siege by physical and mental hardship, before they arrive at the finish line in McGrath six to eight days after starting their trek.
This is a true test of human endurance, adaptability, and mental fortitude.
In a way, these circumstances are not unlike the immense emotional, physical, and mental challenges that SEALs face when the time comes to leave their brothers behind, and find purpose and support in an entirely new and foreign life outside the confines of the Navy. Alone, this journey can be just as merciless and fatal as the most violent wilderness. With your help and consideration, we can ensure our veterans have the community support they need to continue to fight for you as a civilian, in whatever way they can.
The Purpose Behind The Adventure
The testimony below was written by the SEAL who is leading and organizing this mission…
“Among a sea of non-profits that claim to assist veteran’s and SEALs improve their health and welfare, SEAL Future Foundation is one of the few that actually does.
As a SEAL, I have known about this organization for around one year. During that time they have consistently demonstrated a truly rare degree of institutional selflessness, and a clarity of purpose beyond the many programs available to transitioning Veterans.
They have provided hundreds of thousands of dollars for my best friend’s medical bills, a SEAL who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. They provide a robust community of support in virtually any city a SEAL might find themselves in, ensuring that nobody is alone while enduring the immensely vulnerable and misunderstood struggle that is a veteran’s transition to civilian life. Most significantly to me personally, the SEAL Future Foundation takes an aggressive approach to mental health, undeniably one of the most complex and demanding challenges of our time. SEAL Future Foundation benefactors regularly report the support they receive from this organization as nothing less than fundamentally and positively life altering. There are few organizations who can claim the same.
I am a Navy SEAL, and I am biased in my love for my brothers, their families, and the country and values we serve. I will always fight for their well-being. However, mental health and welfare is a challenge that touches everyone, and a challenge that needs all the help it can get, from as many as people as possible, from all walks of life. The SEAL Future Foundation is one of the only organizations that confronts the issue of veteran’s appalling state of mental health with un-daunting courage on a daily basis, and is more than worthy of your help. To demonstrate our commitment to this fight, a group of between five and ten SEALs and supporters will ruck 350 miles of the historic Iditarod Trail in Alaska from March 1st – March 8th 2019.
The right cause is one worth fighting and struggling for, and this expedition reflects exactly that. These circumstances that SEALs were originally designed for – to put it all on the line against overwhelming odds, for a worthy cause. The extraordinary challenge to improve the mental health of our community, in whatever way you choose, is one I humbly extend to you.
Make this your cause today. With your support, we make the odds of success in this fight that much higher, and give creedence to one of the most worthy causes imaginable. Donate, tag, participate, or tell a friend. The importance of this purpose cannot be overstated, and the sooner we act the better. Join us in the fight.”
